Gremista Waste Management Facility

Disposal of hazardous items

The Gremista Waste Management Facility can accept the following hazardous items (classed as Special Waste in Scotland):

  • Asbestos (must be double wrapped in plastic, contact the weighbridge office for access to asbestos skip - (SEPA note required)
  • Batteries- large
  • Car/bike batteries
  • Energy saving bulbs
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Garden or household chemicals
  • Paints
  • Waste oil
  • Vehicles tyres - commercial waste please go over the weighbridge

Any queries please speak to a member of our staff.

Due to their nature, these items must be disposed of properly and should not be put in general rubbish skips.

The following items cannot be accepted at the Gremista Waste Management Facility, please contact the necessary authorities:

  • Fire extinguishers: return them to your supplier
  • Flares: contact HM Coastguard on 01595 692976
  • Gas bottles/cylinders: return them to your supplier
  • Sharps (eg needles): contact NHS Shetland 01595 743060
