Hearing Support Service

The Hearing Support Service is part of the Education Outreach Service and we work to promote inclusion and improve outcomes for children and young people across Shetland.

We work in partnership with parents and other professionals to make sure the needs of deaf and children with hearing loss are met.

We can offer support and advice to pupils with all levels of hearing loss.

Following assessment we can provide:

  • specialist teaching
  • advice and support for hearing impaired pupils and their peers
  • advice and support for class teachers and other staff
  • deaf awareness training for class teachers, support staff and pupils
  • home visits for pre-school pupils
  • advice regarding room layout and specialist equipment
  • training and advice in the use of specialist equipment
  • links with other agencies

Requests for involvement can come from audiology (following parent / pupil consent), parents or carers and schools.
