Operational note: Weather update – 18 November 2020

rainfall

Following heavy rainfall over Shetland this morning a number of calls have been received today about flooded roads in many areas.

Roads staff are currently working to clear blocked drains and ditches wherever possible and to place warning signs in affected areas.

Drivers should slow down and take care when driving through areas of standing water, which can be of unknown depth.  Surface water will drain in due course but heavy rain is forecast to continue throughout the day.

Temperatures are expected to fall to near freezing this evening and overnight, with a forecast of strong northerly winds and snow showers across Shetland.  Anyone expecting to travel tomorrow morning should plan ahead for possible disruption on roads and public transport.

Ferry passengers can check the service status of inter-island ferries  and the Council’s Roads weather stations also give the latest air and road surface temperatures at four locations around Shetland
