Deferred Entry to Primary 1
Deferring Entry into Primary 1
If your child was born between 1 March 2017 and 28 February 2018, they are eligible to start primary school in August 2022. If your child is still four on 16 August 2022, then you can request to defer your child's entry into primary 1 to August 2023. Your child will receive a further year of early learning and childcare.
If you are considering deferring your child's entry into primary 1, you must complete the online form below by 15 March 2022. This will ensure that their place in their Early Learning and Childcare setting is kept for them. If you require any support to complete this form, please contact the Early Learning and Childcare team on 01595 744797.
Previously, only children with a fifth birthday between January and February were automatically entitled to an additional year of funded early learning and childcare if entry to primary one was deferred. However, from August 2021 children who are resident in Shetland whose fifth birthday is between mid-August (the day after the school commencement date) and the end of February will be automatically entitled to an additional year of funded early learning and childcare. This is because Shetland Islands Council are one of five local authorities offering this as part of a Scottish Government initiative prior to it becoming a universal right from August 2023.
