Supporting Health and Social Care Planning in Shetland

The Strategic Planning Group (SPG) is s a team of people from different backgrounds who help shape health and care services in Shetland. The SPG has been set up by the Shetland Islands Integration Joint Board (IJB) as an advisory group. The SPG includes health and social care professionals, service users, carers, third sector representatives, emergency services, and community organisations.

What the SPG does and how it supports the IJB and the community

The SPG provides advice to Shetland Island's Integration Joint Board (IJB). The SPG main aim is to support the development and review of the Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) Joint Strategic Plan.  The HSCP Joint Strategic Plan looks at how Health and Social Care services should work for people in Shetland. The SPG helps to make sure that local voices and experiences are heard, and that these help to shape health and social care services in Shetland. The SPG supports collaboration, inclusion, and evidence-based planning.

  • The SPG provides advice and feedback to the Integration Joint Board, helping to ensure that strategic plans are fair, meet local needs, and are realistic
  • SPG members advocate for service users and carers, and represent the needs and views of Shetland’s communities
  • SPG members share ideas, feedback, and suggestions to help support better planning
  • The SPG do not make decisions, but their input is valuable in helping to ensure that Health and Social Care services are effective and inclusive

The members of the SPG include

  • Members nominated by Shetland Islands Council and Shetland Health Board
  • Health and social care professionals
  • Community planning professionals
  • Representives for service users and carers
  • Third sector and independent providers (such as Voluntary Action Shetland, Shared Lives Shetland, Shetland Community Connections, Recovery Hub, Crossreach)
  • Emergency services (Scottish Ambulance Service,  Scottish Fire & Rescue Service)
  • Housing providers (SIC Housing, Hjaltland Housing Association)
