Finance - How we plan and track spending
Shetland IJB is responsible for the strategic planning and arranging (commissioning) of health and social care services. The funding for the IJB comes from contributions made by NHS Shetland and the Shetland Islands Council, showing that they work together to provide a partnership approach to delivering these important services.
Shetland IJB are committed to being transparent about how we manage these public funds. To do this, we create and publish regular financial reports. These reports help us plan for the future and keep a close eye on our spending. We produce two main types of reports: an annual budget report and a five-year financial plan known as a Medium Term Financial Plan (MTFP).
Our Annual Budget Report
Each financial year we create a detailed budget that outlines how we plan to spend our money. Throughout the year, we compare this plan to our actual spending. We check this frequently and produce reports called Financial Monitoring Report every three months (quarterly). This helps us make sure we're staying on track and using our resources wisely. These reports go to the IJB and IJB audit meetings.
Our Five-Year Financial Plan (Medium Term Financial Plan - MTFP)
We also look and plan ahead to help us to manage our spending, we do this by creating a five-year financial plan (MTFP). This plan takes into account the broader economic picture, both locally and nationally, as well as the resources we expect to have available. It helps us develop a long-term strategy for managing our finances, including day-to-day costs and larger investments. This plan also helps us anticipate potential challenges and opportunities, so we can be prepared for the future.
We believe that clear and accessible financial information is essential for transparentcy, understanding and trust. You can learn more about how we're managing public funds from looking at our reports; our current MTFP is the Medium Term Financial Plan 2025-2030.
