A Shetland wide Youth PB Project to distribute £8,200, undertaken in 2012.

The aims of the project were to:

  • Engage young people and develop their decision making processes
  • Enhance their understanding of participatory democracy and citizenship
  • Improving the services available to young people

A steering group was established comprising young people form Youth Voice and Scottish Youth Parliament along with support staff from SIC departments.

A consultation process was undertaken to identify needs and priorities.  Feedback informed the setting of funding priorities with youth organisations and young people encouraged to submit funding bids for projects with shortlisted projects submitting a 3 minute video presentation of their idea.  These videos were shown around Shetland with young people invited to vote for the projects they thought should get funding.  Young people registered and voted online using their young scot card.

This was the first PB project piloted solely with young people in Shetland.  By enabling young people to make decisions in this way we encouraged them to engage in discussion around areas not traditionally considered by their age group.

The project raised the profile of Youth Voice locally and provided another means for Shetland’s MSYP’s to engage with young people all over Shetland on the issues of importance to them.

The 6 projects which received funding were delivered as set out in their funding bids.  Shetland Young Promoters Group has gone from strength to strength.  Roktober was a great success and the group continues to attract new members and put on local gigs and events for young people.  Shetland Skatepark Association went on to complete the construction of a quality purpose built sprayed concrete skatepark for Shetland.  Northern Focus Parkour has more young people trained and continues to meet, deliver coaching and training locally.  The Young Mums Group completed its peer education project and has completed several other projects since, including healthy eating and cooking initiatives.  A2B delivered a youth cafe and were able to out on extra bus runs for young people.
