Modern Apprenticeships (MA) – Social Services & Healthcare (SCQF Level 6)

You don’t need previous experience in care; what matters most is your attitude, values, and willingness to learn.
Shetland Islands Council recruits Modern Apprentices into adult and community care services. Modern Apprentices work alongside experienced staff in residential services for older adults, mental health, learning disabilities and autism.

What does a Modern Apprentice do?
Modern Apprentices work alongside experienced colleagues in adult and community care services. This can include supporting people who are older, people with mental health needs, and people with learning disabilities or autism.
Your role may involve:
- Supporting people with everyday activities and routines
- Encouraging independence and confidence
- Helping people stay connected to their community
- Working as part of a team to provide safe, respectful support
- You won’t be expected to know everything on day one; training and supervision are built in from the start.

Training and support
You will:
- Be supported by experienced colleagues and managers

What you will need
To work in social care, you will need:
- A caring, respectful attitude
- To join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme
- To register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC)
