Access to Nursing, Social Care & Allied Health Professions (SCQF Level 6)

If you’re in S5 or S6 and thinking about a future in nursing, social care or allied health professions, an Access route can help you understand what these careers are really like before taking your next step. This pathway is designed to support young people who want to explore health and social care in a structured and supportive way.

What is the Access route?

The Access route helps you:

  • Learn more about different health and social care roles
  • Build confidence and relevant skills
  • Prepare for apprenticeships, further training or study
  • It’s a practical way to explore your interests while still at school.

This is a Work Based Learning Route that is ideal for S5/S6 pupils planning a future in care.

Is this right for you?

This route may suit you if you:

  • Enjoy working with people
  • Are curious about health or care careers
  • Want to understand your options before leaving school
  • Would benefit from a supported transition into further learning or work

This is a one year course for S5/S6 students combining theory and practical insight into careers in nursing, allied health professions, social services and social work including:

  • National Progression Award (NPA) in Social Services & Healthcare
  • SVQ2 units and real work placement
  • Industry experience by shadowing staff and undertaking projects
  • Covers safeguarding, communication, safe practice, and human development
  • Equivalent to one Higher and accepted by all Scottish universities 

Where can this lead?

Taking part in an Access programme can help you move on to:

  • A Modern Apprenticeship in Social Care
  • Further education or training
  • Entry-level roles in care (where available)
